Teh Journal of an

This evening, Nemo and I will lead a Live Tutorial Session in the Apophysis group's chat room (I presume).  We will discuss, obviously, how to create Grand Julians.  I'm hoping it will go well, though I'm a little nervous since I have never been in dAmn before and I'm not exactly a fan of IM.  But, I'm hoping for the best.

So, if anyone here is still a dA member, feel free to hop over to the Apophysis chat room tonight at 7:30 PM EST.

For more information on the tutorial session, go here: [link]

Some of you might recognize some of the recent pieces I have uploaded.  I've been going through a rough period right now; so bad, in fact, that I haven't rendered anything in perhaps two weeks, just to put it in perspective.  I don't think that it's a matter of pushing something that shouldn't be pushed since I haven't actually done or attempted to do anything lately.  I think my book, or rather the lack of me doing anything with it, is starting to make me panic.  Yesterday, I opened up Apophysis, started messing around and found a promising flame that I will render soon.  I'm a little bummed that it looks like all of the other Two Transform stuff I do, though.  Argh, it's the friggin' PMDD that's preventing me from doing anything right now.

Oh yeah.  And the journal layout is still...going.  I'll keep working on it.

Just a warning: I'm working on a new skin layout for SA.N, so my page might appear wonky when you visit.

I got most of the current skin up and running only to realize that I hate it!  Oranges and browns really aren't my cup of tea.  I had tried to coordinate this site with my personal website, which I like, but there is just too much orange and brown here.  Not to mention that my poor Renderaholic ID, that I finally got configured, does not work.  At all.

So, I'm going to have to figure out which render to use next, probably something in blue or green.  I'm also going to have to be more creative and think about what I'm doing, not just slap something together from previous work like I did here.

Well, I'll see.

What the HECK is up with dA

Teh Journal

I haven't had internet for awhile (about six months) and was rather surprised when I logged onto dA to find...you know what?  I don't even know.  I'm saying my piece here out of fear of possible retribution.

It starts like this.  I was having a great time with dA; I had lots of friends, I was fairly popular, all in all, I liked it.  Then dA decided to introduce v5.  They started to promote the new version and there was general (overwhelming) dissent.  dA offered a week trial where users could try out the new version.  Still, most didn't like it.  To counter this, I presume, dA had all of their admins write about how great the new version was and how much they loved it, blah blah blah.

I'm not sure if these testimonials were genuine, considering what actually happened after v5 was implemented.  Please keep in mind that v4, while generally stable, was still not bug free.  Anyway, v5's launch was...not good.  There were, and still are, too many bugs with v5.  A basic example is that not all of deviations show up in a user's gallery.  Due to these bugs, many in dA began to ask when they would be addressed, since some are severe.  Well, I was surprised when I logged in on one of my rare visits to the internet and found out one of my friends had left dA because of how she was treated by admin.

Yesterday, I was viewing other people's pages and ran across a little comment message from Spyed going on about the blue/red pill Matrix thing.  Curious, I went to the page and found his journal entry on the Wikipedia entry for dA [link].  In it, he mentions the strife between himself and Jark.  Though I had been with dA for quite some time, I wasn't really aware of what had happened with the founders.  As far as I can tell, the situation is mostly he said/he said.  To see if Jark had anything to say, I hopped over to his page and started reading his journal entry about the relevance of dA [link].  Regardless of the comments, I discovered some very interesting things.  Two people who commented on the journal also mentioned that they were recent admins to SA.N.  It took me awhile to notice, because I wasn't familiar with the symbol, but both of these individuals have since been banned.  Also, I discovered that some forum conversations on the current state of dA had been locked (ie, virtually removed).  I know that there are others that have been banned due to speaking out against the state of dA.

Couple that with the stuff the admin is doing.  They're moving deviations and claiming that they were in the wrong spot.  When shown that the deviation was in the proper section, the admin refuses to allow the deviation to be moved back.  WTF?  Let's not even mention all the recent deviation removals for the weirdest (and questionable) reasons.

Before my unexpected internet leave, I had a most unfortunate run in with an admin.  It was a simple poll with one of the dA groups I was in asking whether users thought there should be more artisan crafts DDs.  Now, if I had known that there was a history behind the poll, I probably wouldn't have answered it.  The person in charge of the group brought in the gallery director to show her the results.  The GD completely misinterpreted the motivation behind the poll and then went after every single person who said that there should be more artisan craft DDs and that it was our responsibility to note her with potential artisan crafts.    Not only do I disagree with that last little bit, but it made me pretty much stop doing anything with the artisan crafts group, lest I draw the  GD's ire again.  I was surprised by the event and I know others were too.

I'm not saying that we should abandon dA entirely, just that the site is overwhelmed.  I really liked going there up until six months ago.  And I can easily point out some of the problems dA faces.  They have too many users, inadequate numbers of servers and they switched to an instable interface.  On top of it, they keep adding new features (that often don't work right) and promising new features that never come.  One of my biggest complaints I have is with the journal features.  With the addition of CSS for subscribers, shouldn't basic features like centering and images (ahem, already hosted on third party servers) be available for everyone?  And what's with the CSS anyway?  I love CSS, but I'm not liking what it does for dA.  First, it can be very difficult to understand and second, while many CSS journals are very well done, most aren't and conflict with the overall feel of dA.

But all of this is probably just me.

Anyway, go back to your normal life and away from my confused tirade.    I think it will work out in the end, this is just a rough spot in dA's history.

So, I found out about SAN through Gill (WelshWench) and now I'm here.    I haven't given up dA for good as I had purchased a print account awhile back and I'll be damned if I don't get some use out of it.  But, I'm willing to see what happens at SAN.  I also guess that the nearly 10,000 messages that had accumulated may have had something to do with my hasty retreat here.

It is weird to come to SAN after being at the other place and have such little activity here.

For the past several months, I have been putting together a website to house my Apophysis resources and online tutorials.  However, I was without Internet for some time and couldn't upload the files.

But, I have internet now and my site is now online.
